Consultancy and training for non-governmental organisations (NGOs)

Stephen carries out training and consultancy assignments (such as organisational / programme / project evaluations) on a regular basis for relief and development NGOs .

Stephen is available for consultancy assignments, particularly in the following areas, capitalising on over 20 years overseas and UK based experience in the voluntary sector:

  • Training / Workshop facilitation, particularly Project Cycle Management (PCM), Advocacy, Monitoring and Evaluation, Strategic planning, Community Development, and Organisational Governance.

  • Project document reviews / desk evaluations (particular skills in Community Development, appropriate technology, alternative energy, vocational training, and enterprise development)

Recent assignments include:

  • Advocacy training and Advocacy planning support for EU Social Protection Programme partners in Afghanistan;
  • Development Project Cycle Management and Proposal Writing training courses in Afghanistan, Armenia, Bangladesh, Kenya (with participants from 9 African countries), Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uganda, Uzbekistan and the UK. Follow-up mentoring provided as required;
  • Programme evaluations using participatory methods in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal and the UK;
  • Monitoring and Evaluation training in Afghanistan;
  • Monitoring and Evaluation planning for large Government funded programme in Afghanistan;
  • Governance training workshop in Nepal;
  • Leadership Training: "Creating Organisational Strategy", in Afghanistan
  • Facilitation skills - in Afghanistan, and Training of Trainers, in Nepal;
  • Facilitation of Country Strategy Development for large UK based donor agency, for Nepal, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan;
  • Successful GBP 3.5million multi-country multi-organisation programme proposal development for government funding;
  • Strategic planning facilitation for NGOs in Nepal and Afghanistan involving a variety of programme sectors; Also training of others to facilitate strategy development;
  • Advocacy training workshops in Afghanistan;
  • Organisational review leading to development of a long term strategy for UK based NGO network;
  • Project document reviews / desk evaluations for various projects in Afghanistan, Central Asia, Sudan and tsunami affected areas.

Summary of relevant experience and skills:

  • A mix of overseas and UK consultancy assignments since April 2003 including training, strategic planning support, evaluations and proposal / report writing.
  • 6 years as Desk Officer responsible for managing Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) partnerships carrying out a wide range of relief and development programmes and projects in Afghanistan, Central Asia and Eastern Europe.
  • Board Chairman of the British and Irish Agencies Afghanistan Group (BAAG) until October 2010
  • 5½ years overseas experience working in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, plus extensive visits to South and Central Asia and Eastern Europe.
  • 4 years overseas project management experience.
  • Key player in organisational strategic planning and decision making.
  • Broad experience and understanding of development and relief projects.
  • Designing and implementing project and programme evaluations.
  • Designing and conducting development and project cycle management training.
  • Proven ability to work well under high stress conditions.
  • Experience reinforced with relevant training and academic qualifications.
  • Very computer literate with experience of a wide range of software and hardware.

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Development Management (Open University)
  • Bachelor of Engineering Honours degree, BEng(Hons)
  • B/T.E.C. Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering
  • T.E.C. Certificate in Mechanical and Production Engineering
  • T.E.C. Certificate in Telecommunications
  • European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)
  • Also completed many short courses
  •  

Other skills:

  • Excellent skills in spoken and written English. I have also obtained a reasonable level of spoken fluency in Dari (Afghan Persian).
